Contact Adhesive

Firestone Splice Adhesive is a contact adhesive, designed for splicing EPDM.

Preparation

Surfaces to be adhered must be cleaned with Firestone Splice Wash and allowed to dry. Stir the adhesive thoroughly before and during use, achieving a uniform mix with no sediment on the bottom and no marbling evident. Restore the adhesive to room temperature prior to use, if exposed to temperatures lower than 15 degrees for a prolonged period.

Application

Apply a thick, even, smooth coat on both surfaces using a 75 – 100mm wide solvent resistant paintbrush. Do not use circular motions for applying Splice Adhesive, do not use paint rollers or a brush attached to a long handle. Allow the adhesive to flash off prior to mating the surfaces (flash-off time depends on ambient air conditions). Test the adhesive for its dryness, using the push-touch procedure.

Coverage

A uniform application is required to avoid mixed results. Coverage rate for a standard splice width of 100mm, both sides is 30lm per 3.78 Litre tin.

Precautions

Flammable. Keep away from sources of ignition. Do not smoke when using. For professional use only. Use only in well ventilated areas. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Keep out of the reach of children.

Firestone waterbased adhesive

Firestone Water Based Adhesive

Description

Firestone Water Based Adhesive WBA-3781 is designed for bonding Firestone EPDM to Timber surfaces.

Preparation

Bonding surfaces must be clean, dry, smooth, free of sharp edges, loose and foreign materials, oil, grease and any other contaminants.

Application

Stir adhesive thoroughly before and during use. Use only when temperatures will not fall below freezing at anytime 24 hours after mating of EPDM.

Apply WBA-3781 over plywood or OSB substrates with a solvent resistant roller, taking care to completely cover the substrate evenly to avoid globs and puddles of adhesive. The EPDM may be Wet-mated to the coated plywood or OSB by rolling the membrane in place over the substrate. To ensure proper adhesion, compress the bonded portion of the sheet to the substrate with a stiff broom or heavy roller, such as a linoleum roller.

Coverage

Coverage Rate – Wet Applied to Timber Deck

2.5L Tub – approx 8 – 10m2

5L Tub – approx 18 – 20m2

Firestone Water Based Adhesive Must Be Used Onto Timber

A Quick FAQ

We often have customers ask what the difference is between Bonding adhesive and Waterbased / Deck Adhesive.

Bonding adhesive is a much stronger adhesive which is used for bonding to most materials as well as wood and used around the edges of the EPDM, on any up-stands, bonding to brickwork etc where an effective and quick hold is required to keep the EPDM in place. Bonding adhesive is applied to both the EPDM and the surface.

Deck Adhesive / Waterbased Adhesive is more suited to wood and ply adhesion on the main area of the deck. The reasons why Waterbased / Deck is often used is because it is easy to lay, you can lay the EPDM straight onto it while it is still wet and it is also possible to correct mistakes shortly after the EPDM has been laid down up to 2-3 times if you find there is unwanted debris underneath due to it taking slightly longer than bonding to dry.

Quickprime plus

Firestone Quickprime Plus

Description

Firestone Quickprime Plus is designed to clean and prime the EPDM membrane prior to application of Quickseam products. Quickprime Plus must be applied with a Quickscrubber Pad and Handle.

Preparation

Surfaces to be primed must be clean, dry and free of foreign materials, talc and dirt. Pre-cleaning with Splice Wash may be required. Stir Quickprime Plus thoroughly before and during use. When exposed to lower temperatures for a prolonged period of time, restore to room temperature prior to use. Pour the required amount of Quickprime Plus into a bucket for ease of application.

Application

Apply Quickprime Plus to the EPDM membrane with a Quickscrubber Pad and Handle, using long back and forth strokes with moderate to heavy pressure along the length of the area. Continue until surfaces become dark grey in colour (no streaking or puddling). Factory seams require parallel as well as perpendicular application motions along the factory seam. Allow the primed surfaces to dry completely according to the touch-push test (usually less than 10 minutes) before applying Quickseam products (3″ seam tape, 6″ batten cover strip, 9″ formflash etc)

Coverage

Thinning is not allowed. The following coverage rates can be achieved Per Litre of Quickprime Plus,

Standard seam with 3″ seam tape = 15lm – 2 sides
“>6” batten cover strip = 8lm – 1 side
“>5” Flashing Tape = 10lm – 1 side
9″ Formflash = 4lm – 1 side
RPF Strip = 15lm – 1 side
RMA Strip = 15lm – 1 side

Precautions

Flammable, keep away from sources of ignition. Do not smoke when using. For professional use only. Use only in well ventilated areas. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Keep out of reach of children.

Storage

Store in original containers at temperatures between 15 – 25 degrees. Keep the material out of direct sunlight until ready for application.

Shelf life – 12 months, when stored in above mentioned conditions, shelf life will be reduced if exposed to higher temperatures.
